Sometimes you need to visit and revisit a location in order to archive the results that you are looking for. For Shelley and I’s trip to Kauai, Kilauea Point was one such location for me.
After a day of exploring Kauai for photographic compositions, Shelley and I settled on Poipu for photographing the setting sun.
Some nights sit you with your camera pointed at a composition. The waves are right. There are just enough clouds in the sky with your frame. The breeze cools you as you watch the setting sun. And at the last moment, as the sun is sinking closer to the horizon, you realize that another cloud bank as cut off the light that is needed for the sky to ignite in your carefully composed photograph. Then you just sit there watching the waves and setting sun. Take in a deep breath and think to yourself what a beautiful day.
As I sit here writing this post in the middle of 2020 I am thinking back to that first full day on the “Garden Island”. Hanapepe Valley was seen in passing on that day. It was just a pull-off from the road to the Russian Fort near Waimea.

Shelley and I headed out to explore Walnut Canyon National Monument on our way to Petrified Forest National Park. While this location is of historical importance and is nestled in a beautiful canyon that beauty alone does not guarantee great photographs.
for my final composition at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. I happened upon this twisted dead tree. That was laying on its side right next to the trail. I loved the shadows that it was casting on the ground. It did not hurt that the tree had multiple twists and turns to it. I sit down on the ground close enough to fill the frame with my wide-angle zoom lens. For this composition, I also wanted to slow down the clouds in the sky. I made this photograph with my Nikon D600 at ISO 100, 14mm, f/11, and 10 seconds.

The problem that we incurred was with the layers of clouds as they were we would most likely not get enough direct sunlight for sunset. Shelley and I arrived on the Point Reyes Peninsula late in the afternoon. After checking into our lodging for the night, we headed for an early dinner.

One day is not even enough time to begin to scratch the surface of this place. Remember that this was a trip that I knew in advance would be like a scouting expedition. Shelley and I will pick a road trip and research things to see and do along the trip. We then take the journey with the understanding that we will not have enough time in most places to see everything that we would like to. Think of it as a “let’s see what is out there to see trip.” It’s a trip that we take to determine what places we’d like to go back to next time and spend more time at. One could easily spend a lifetime exploring Redwoods and might not see everything that there is to see. I, for one, would love to spend a few weeks exploring the “forest moon of Endor”.
Shelley and I arrived at Bandon State Park before sunset after spending time at the Coquille River Lighthouse. The weather had turned within the last few miles since leaving the lighthouse. The skies were mostly overcast, and it had started to rain. Also, the winds had picked up. Bandon State Park is mainly known for Face Rock and the small collection of sea stacks that dot the coastline.

The Cape Perpetua area is a photographer’s dream. The seascapes alone are worth the trip. The main thing to keep in mind is to plan your day around the tides. If you do not plan the trip along the tides then you will be disappointed in the outcome. I love photographing here right around high tide and with some wind. This being said, you need to be mindful of the wave action and how the wind will impact the area. While these conditions lend themselves to the best photographic opportunities, they also come with the highest chances of losing your footing and being swept out to sea. I cannot stress enough the importance of proper footwear at this beautiful location.

Shelley and I left Desert View and the Grand Canyon behind. We headed north to Page Arizona. Home to both Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon.
This morning would be my last chance to photograph at Desert View. Shelley and I departing the Grand Canyon for Page AZ. We ate breakfast and loaded up the vehicle for what was to be the longest driving day of the trip.
As the light was fading in the afternoon of day two of our trip Shelley and I found our selves near Yavapai point. We were walking along the South Rim trail near the Yavapai Geological Museum and Bookstore.
We arrived at Mather point it was filled with people who were in the Park for just the day. It and Desert View were the two busiest points of interest during Shelley and I’s stay in Grand Canyon National Park.
Shelley and I arrived next at Lipan Point. We were still scouting for a sunset location on day two. I must say that Lipan Point is one of my favorite overlooks into the Grand Canyon.
While Shelley and I were out on day two scouting for locations we stopped at Navajo Point. I was looking to compose a photograph that would include Desert View Tower
Shelley and I began our second day at the Grand Canyon by driving from the Grand Canyon Village all the way to the Desert View entrance to the park on the Eastern end of the South Rim. My thinking was to drive as far as Desert View that morning.
For sunset Shelley and I ended up at Mohave Point. We had hiked and driven along the south rim of the Grand Canyon most of the day looking for the best location at which to photograph the setting sun over a portion of the Grand Canyon.
Toward the end of the afternoon, Shelley and I found ourselves at the Hopi Point overlook. Here the South Rim trail runs very close to the parking lot. The trail was covered with packed snow and ice. This caused most people to stay parking lot to take in the view.
While Shelley and I were wandering through and around the buildings along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon we came to Hopi House. While there I learned that The Hopi House was constructed in 1904
When Shelley and I travel we photograph during all qualities of light. And yes this includes during the midday harsh light. For me, photography trips are not just about the act of making photographs, but getting out and making new experiences.
After returning to the room in the Thunderbird Lodge Shelley was awake and ready to go breakfast at the Harvey House Café, located in the Bright Angel Lodge.
Shelley and I awoke on the Canyon rim that first morning to a balmy -14 degrees. Growing up in Minnesota this was not a problem for me.
Let me paint you a picture. The sky is ablaze with reds, oranges, and magentas bouncing off of the clouds that are swirling around the setting sun.
