One of the least stressful visits that Shelley and I had during our time on Kauai is our time spent at the Hanalei Pier. While planning our Photographing Kauai trip we both knew a visit to Hanalei Bay would be high on the list.
Shelley and I head North from Kapa’a to Hanalei. The drive was about 40 minutes. Our goal was to arrive on location with ample time to locate our own compositions of the pier and the setting sun. During my pre-trip research, I had seen various compositions of the pier. I knew that I wanted something different. I also knew that I wanted to be at the location before sunset.
Hanalei Pier
Shelley and I arrived at the pier has planned even with the delay from roadwork near Hanalei. We parked at the end of the road and then walked the short distance to beach.
As Shelley and I walked along the beach looking for our compositions, the sounds of “What a Wonderful World” filled the air. On this evening at Hanalei Bay, just off of the pier, there was a saxophone player.
As the Sun was racing toward the horizon, the sky began to light up. After walking the beach in search of composition, I concluded that I wanted the pier to lead the viewer off into the setting Sun. After all, the fire in the sky was the real star on that beautiful night sitting on the warm sand. The pier was just a secondary player. It was there to provide the leading line to the main event.
I made this photograph with my Nikon D600 at ISO 100, 19mm, f/16, and 8 tenths of a second.
