Part 12 of Into the West is the continuation of a multi-part series that chronicles the journey that Shelley and I embarked on in late August and early September of last year. Day Fourteen
Day fourteen began in Great Falls, Montana with Shelley and I was
Along the way to Billings, Montana Highway 3 (US highways 12 and 87) were dirt roads, which while waiting provided us the chance to photograph one of the many wind farms that are popping up throughout the state.
Shelley and I stopped briefly in Billings, Montana for a late lunch, and then continued south along I-90 hoping that we could make it closer to Devils Tower National Monument for the night.
Little Bighorn National Battlefield Monument
As we closed in on the Little Bighorn National Battlefield Monument area we decided that we had a little bit of time. We exited I-90 knowing that we were not going to make it to Devils Tower National Monument that night.
The battlefield is a changing monument to the past of our nation. It once featured just the fallen men who served the United States military in the Indian war, but now also features those who fell from both sides that were protecting their unique ways of life.
This is a place in our nation that should be forever remembered for the deeds, actions, and the losses that we have suffered. Not only human lives lost on this hollowed ground, but a way of life–a culture that has all but vanished from our diverse world. Remember that when you visit such places in the world; there are many.
We left the battlefield and continued on as far as Gillette, Wyoming before pulling off for the night.
