The Lomaki Ruins at Wupatki National Monument were the first ruins that Shelley and I visited. Originally we were going to drive through the Wupatki National Monument on our way from Page to Flagstaff. After seeing the Lomaki Ruins this all changed.
Shelley and I turned off of US 89 into Wupatki National Monument south of Cameron Arizona. And we headed into the National Monument. The first pullout that we encountered was for the Lomaki and Box Canyon sites.
After parking Shelley and I headed up the trail to the ruins. After a short walk, we arrived at the Box Canyon ruins. Where I had a hard time finding a composition. I walked around looking for something that called to me. And after much trial and error, I gave up on finding a composition at the Box Canyon Ruins. Maybe it was quality of light when Shelley and I first arrived, but I just was not happy with anything I was seeing.
Lomaki Ruins
After Shelley was done photographing the Box Canyon ruins we continued along the trail to the Lomaki Ruins. Here I found a composition that spoke to me. I believe that a large part of it was the motion in the clouds. With the clouds racing from the west/southwest I was able to frame a composition of the ruin. I then added my 6-stop neutral density filter and a circular polarizer to slow down my shutter speed. By doing this I was able to archive a motion effect in the sky. This effect adds drama to the photograph.
I made this photograph with my Nikon D600 at ISO 100, 14mm, f/11, and 13 seconds.
